Beautiful breakfast at Boho Eatery

I went for breakfast today at one of my favourite places to eat in Karen Perhaps in all of Kenya. The observant among you might point out that I’ve done a cursory review of Boho before, in fact I think it was my very first post, but it deserves more, so much more.

The Boho Eatery is a hidden gem. Less hidden than it was before the gorgeous Colin Firth decided to go there last week and post it all over Facebook. Oh and before people kept eating there and then writing amazing reviews about it.  Ok so apart from the fact that it’s down a dirt track in the back-end of Langata it’s not massively hidden at all and becoming more well-known all the time. I digress.

Beautiful location, beautiful building, gorgeous, healthy, organic, sustainable food menu.

Set in the grounds of Ngong House at the end of Ndovu Road. It keeps good company with Upepo . A photographic gallery and Penny Winters outlet store, both of which are worth a mooch around after you’ve eaten. When we went it was raining, isn’t it always raining at the moment? And so I expected another meal in a dark and chilly room I was wrong. The rustic style building opens to a cosy room decorated in a simple but stylish manner. Antique rugs usher you in across flagstone flooring. Floor to ceiling conservatory windows are elegantly paired with scrubbed wooden tables and trailing plants. It was light and airy, warm and comfortable and populated with staff who were available yet unobtrusive and who made us feel very welcome.

Garden delights

I’d been before and sat in the delightful garden. It’s a charming paradise of flowering bushes and hidden corners filled with a colourful riot of bird life. We have spent many a happy hour spotting raptors, sunbirds, butterflies, chamaeleon and rainbow coloured birds of all kinds. This is a garden that is made for lazy days in the sun.

Vegan or not it’s all good

As serene and tasteful as the house and surrounds are, what really makes Boho stand out is its food. It describes itself as Vegan -ish or nearly Vegan. I wonder if it’s a description that may put some potential customers off. The truth is that most the dishes are Vegan, but not all. The meals at Boho are so considerately and delicately put together that you wont miss meat but the whole Vegan thing is a non issue as there are meat options. So in fact it’s not Vegan at all.

Today I went for breakfast and got to experience how a simple dish such as avocado on toast can be turned into a masterpiece. Guacamole rather than avo, and a good guacamole too, perches on Sourdough bread, accompanied by little velvety blobs of hummus. The dish is gloriously crowned with chilli dusted kale, the spiced leaves the perfect counter balance to the creamy avocado dish. This plate was everything you want in avocado and toast and more.  We had it with small stoneware mugs of very good coffee. It was the perfect retreat, a breakfast far from the madding crowd, a rainy morning spent sequestered in warm and cosy greenhouse.

I’ve been here for lunch a couple of times but I’m one of those sad people who once they have a dish at a restaurant they love they can’t bring themselves to choose anything else So every time I come I choose the black bean tacos (see previous blog). My husband is quite partial to the pulled beef burger. With Boho I’m yet to see a dish that isn’t creatively gorgeous looking and steeped in umami. Their chef deserves a medal. Boho should be better known than it is, its food is certainly some of the best I’ve had in Nairobi. I think its location in out-of-the-way Langata stops the crowds from coming in droves. I’m torn between hoping it stays that way and feeling that the people running Boho should get the recognition that they deserve.

An appeal

Dear Ms Boho if you are reading this please start opening for dinner too.. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to sit in your fairytale garden and eat your amazing food by candlelight.
