It’s burger time in Nairobi
Urban Burger has burgers, burgers of all shapes and sizes, all consistently meaty and moreish. Sometimes the best places are found in the most unassuming of places. I would say this is particularly true in Nairobi, you are always finding a gem down n a dirt track or an alleyway. In the UK eating in a shopping mall is rarely gourmet dining. 6 years in Africa haven’t made me think very differently, so the Galleria mall isn’t be the first place I’d think of heading for some scran. But a towering burger of delicious loveliness changed my mind.
Urban Burger
The neon yellow branding of Urban Burger can be spotted from a distance. Perched as it is, on the top floor its outdoor seating overlooking the car park. Urban Burgers sunshiny branding shouts fast food chain and further added to my ‘shopping mall’ dubiousness. Indeed, Urban Burger does have restaurants across Nairobi, but that’s where the similarity with Burger King ends
Drinks and food which aint burgers 
Where to begin? A whole page of the menu is dedicated to drinks; mammoth milkshakes, house wines, all the popular cocktails and a wide selection of beers. The mostly meat focussed menu initially navigates away from burgers with international favourites including pepper steak, fish n chips, mac n cheese, Philly cheesesteak sandwich and ribs up for grabs. The few times we’ve been there we’ve never seen anyone eat anything other than a burger, because unsurprisingly Urban Burger is ALL ABOUT THE BURGERS.
Know your Urban burger
I’ve a friend who is a burger food critic. I know, what a job! He only ever orders a standard burger as he places great emphasis on the right kind of patty, the right bun and fresh salad filling. The house burger would have scored high on his hit list. Meaty, plump pattys wobble atop pillowy buns. For me though, I’m a girl for whom more is more and when faced with a menu of burgers from all walks of life I opted for maximum fillings. I had the Santa Fe. I asked for the burger cooked medium rare, which was a little too rare for me. The gigantic burger came with guacamole, jalapenos and tomatoes and was a little Mexican fiesta in the middle of Nairobi. Just lush.
My husband had the pulled pork burger, which was so good, there really are no words. So here’s a picture whichmay do it justice.
Off the specials menu our friend ordered the shwarma burger, which I admit to nicking half of. Whoever thought of combining the two of the best ever late night foods into one glorious medley deserves a medal. Authentic spiced shwarma meat balanced on that dense patty, was burger perfection.
The huge portions all came with homemade pickle, a big basket of excellent fries and a smile from the waitress.
Every time we go we bump into people we know, so I’m hardly touting a hidden gem. Let this blog serve as a reminder of how lunchtime can be, if you go all out and spoil yourself. This is a fabulous spot for lunch or dinner. Be warned though, you’ll be so full you’ll be wobbling about like Santa on Christmas morning.
