Your shopping list of locally sourced, organic Foods in Kenya

 

“My husband has refined tastes,” my friends says. “So do I!” I cry (although we all know I am more than partial to wine and cocoa pops for supper). So she sent me a list of her preferred suppliers for all the good stuff. Good stuff meaning locally sourced, organic foods in Kenya and products from suppliers running sustainable businesses…. wow that’s a mouthful.

And I’m sharing with you.

Getting locally sourced, organic foods in Kenya is hard. Sometimes it’s hard just to get good food.

It took me years of living in Africa before I realised that you couldn’t just pop down to the shops with a Jamie Oliver recipe and expect to find the ingredients there. Shopping in Nairobi for a dinner party is akin to a military manoeuvre. 3 different shops, order some stuff in, find half of it has gone rotten – rethink recipe.

In part, this is supply chain. In part, this is because for fruit and veg, most Kenyan shops stock only that which is in season. This second part I champion. We should all eat only what is local and available at the time of year. But is all fresh veg made equal? And what about our animal friends? Does free range mean free range?

ORGANIC VEGETABLES IN KENYA

The best way to get organic foods in Kenya is to grow your own, but if your garden seems only to like tomatoes and rocket, then there are lots of places to buy organic vegetables.

Kalimoni Greens

Vegetables are grown at a farm between Karen & Ngong and on the Aberdares. All food is organic, handpicked and in season and that’s the whole point. What they can’t grow on their own farm they source in from other organic farms.
In addition to their yummy fresh vegetables and fruits, Kalimoni Greens stock a few dried items such a nut butters, Sirmon Cheeses, pastas and pet food.

Ecoscapes Market Garden

Ecoscapes is a local farm down in Naivasha, growing everything that is good and natural and organic. They grow over 50 types of organic fruit and vegetables.

Veggies don’t always grow to order so its prudent to get their latest shopping list from their Facebook page and order what you want in advance. Fruit and veggies can be picked up at Langata Link every Wednesday 8.30-4.30 and every Thursday at The Souk 9.00-4.30.

Sylvias Basket

Sylvias Basket is a small scale farm based in Limuru. Order from Sylvia and you will receive veggies so fresh they guarantee not to have been picked more than 24 hours before receipt. Syvia shuns the use of pesticides but if necessary uses only certified, safe and biological products on her veg.

GOOD CHEESE & CONDIMENTS

Lekker Cheese

Lekker Cheese is Lekker (Boom, boom, excuse the pun I couldn’t resist). The work with local cheese makers to supply you with Kenyan made Gouda from Freisian heifers. Different types of gouda are available, my favourite is the cumin. They also do a mean stroopwaffle and jams, preserves and wines. Whate more do you need for a picnic. Sirimon Cheese & Browns Cheese

Both are reputable local companies producing quality cheeses. They are ethically farmed, meaning happy animals and a low carbon footprint.

Started at home in the kitchen. These jars of gorgeousness were so delicious that it didn’t take long for the major supermarkets to stock them. Despite being sold all over Kenya, Jars of Goodness stays true to their roots and uses only the best local and fresh ingredients and organic foods in Kenya.

ORGANIC BEEF

Morendat

Morendat Farm is located in Naivasha. They produced finely marbled aged beef that is in high demand from the very best restaurants and homes in Kenya. Their ethically treated cows are grain fed, rather than grass fed before being aged 21 days in cold rooms inspired by local Maasai practices. The result is a marbled effect which, when cooked, provides premier quality juiced steaks.

Well Hung Butcher

Another excellent beef supplier in Kenya. The Well Hung Butcher based in Northern Kenya uses steers and lamb that are holistically raised and 100% grass fed, before being slaughtered with respect and compassion. The beef is hung in the cold room for 28 days and lamb for 5 days before being broken down into the different cuts and vacuum packed for distribution.

ORGANIC PORK

One of my closest friends is vegan, and she tells me that off all animals farmed for food, pigs often suffer the worst conditions and have the highest intelligence, so to me, finding happy pigs is vitally important.

Highland Castle Farms rears pigs’ houses in spacious pens that live stress-free lives on the slopes of Mount Kenya. FREE RANGE CHICKEN

Farmer Max offers us free-range chickens raised on rich pastures on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Kentuna is based out of Watamu and sells locally caught fish around the country. You can buy online via Greenspoon or arrange for delivery to your door. Organic Food Market at KSPCA

The Saturday organic food market at the KSPCA in Karen is quite the place to be seen. People pop down for a basket of fresh veggies and end up staying the day with drinks and lunch at the many food vendors. Lots of local suppliers selling home made, organic food Kenya. Saturdays 9 – 5

Shamba Farmers Market

Shamba Farmers Market in Loresho is open every weekend with load of craft and food stalls. A great day out and fabulous place to buy your local products and organic food supplies. Head over the Shamba Cafe for breakfast or brunch. Saturdays and Sunday 9 – 4 Loresho Ridge.
