Escape the city at Lake Naivasha
The journey down the Rift Valley from Nairobi into the wide open spaces of the rift is to travel from chaos to calm. Stress to serenity. My love of Lake Naivasha and its peaceful surrounds is well documented. From the breathtaking beauty of Hells Gate National Park to the ultra laid back Camp Carnellys, Naivasha is my number one choice for a day trip or weekend break out of the city.
Naivasha Yacht Club
A weekend break at Naivasha Yacht Club is the perfect mix of solitude, space and glamping. As it’s a members only club you have to chat up someone with a membership or commit to learning to sail the hippo lake to gain access, but its Oh So Worth It.
Home to over 500 hippos, most parts of the lake are inaccessible and swimming is strictly forbidden. Lotus Island is formed from the ring of a sunken volcano. This tiny island is the majestic residence of the Naivasha Yacht Club, where daring members brave the hippos on their sailboats, SUPs and Kayaks. It’s not for the meek.. its ridiculous fun.. a summation of most trips into the wild in Kenya I’d say.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll let the beauty of the lake and its wild animals do all the talking for me.

Naivasha Yacht Club is steeped in history and tradition, a plaque in its rather fine club house boasts Lord Errol as one of its first Commodores. Lake Naivasha looks like a nice change from the usual hustle bustle of city life. Such a peaceful and serene atmosphere can totally revive a man’s soul.
I love Yachts. Have been on one only a few times, but they are so elegant and interesting in the context of engineering.
